A dual relationship occurs when an RBT has both a professional and personal role with a client or family, which may compromise objectivity. Maintaining professional boundaries ensures interventions remain evidence-based, ethical, and safe.

DRI targets a behavior that cannot physically occur at the same time as the problem behavior. For example, keeping hands in pockets makes it impossible to hit. DRO (B) reinforces the absence of a behavior, DRA (C) reinforces a functional alternative, and DRL (D) reinforces lower rates of behavior. DRI is powerful because it ensures the replacement behavior directly blocks the occurrence of the unwanted one, helping reduce unsafe or disruptive behaviors effectively.

Professional conduct requires open communication with supervisors. If an RBT feels uncomfortable or unsure about an intervention, the ethical response is to discuss these concerns with their supervising BCBA. This allows clarification, additional training, or adjustments to be made. Refusing or replacing procedures independently (A, C) is outside the RBT’s scope. Asking another RBT to take over permanently (D) avoids responsibility and undermines supervision. Addressing concerns with the supervisor ensures the intervention remains ethical, effective, and aligned with client welfare.
