Propane is a highly flammable compressed gas. Cylinders must be stored outdoors, upright, secured to prevent tipping, and separated from ignition sources, combustibles, and incompatible gases. Ventilation is critical to prevent accumulation of leaking gas. Stacking horizontally is prohibited, as it risks valve damage and uncontrolled release. Storage indoors or in mechanical rooms is dangerous, as leaks can accumulate and cause explosions. Flammable storage cabinets are not designed for LPG cylinders and would concentrate vapors. OSHA and NFPA standards require at least 20 ft separation from oxygen cylinders and protective barriers from vehicle impact. Bypassing LOTO places workers at risk of electrocution or crushing. Leadership must address behavior immediately, coaching the worker on why full compliance is life-critical. If noncompliance continues, progressive discipline ensures accountability. Ignoring or reassigning without feedback does not correct unsafe behavior. Reducing LOTO complexity undermines protections. Reinforcing through toolbox talks, supervisor audits, and recognition for proper compliance strengthens culture.
